Winter Storm Update

As expected, all major counties in the Richmond area have closed schools to preempt the expected road conditions. Sean's updated snow predictions average anywhere 4"-8" inches around Richmond with increased snowfall towards the Short Pump area.

Based on the weather conditions, school response should be fairly consistent. The snow we're experiencing this weekend is quite different from the snow we received a week ago: last week, the snow was light and fluffy while this week it is icy and heavy. Bad news: shoveling will be twice as strenuous. Good news: it will take longer for schools to reopen.

VDOT crews are on standby waiting to start snow removal, but at this point their efforts would be negligible as we are still experiencing precipitation. We should get our last bit of weather by Saturday night, and it is doubtful that the roads will be good enough for schools to reopen.

If the metro area receives eight inches, then it is likely that schools will not re-open for a few days. If we receive less than the highest expected amount, then roads can be cleared faster and school response will change. As we still have not received most of the precipitation, check back later this weekend for more specific predictions.
