Richmond Snowstorm #3: 2/5-2/7

A new batch of winter weather is set to hit Richmond this weekend, starting early tomorrow morning. This will be the third major storm of the season, following the storm in December that left us with close to a foot of snow and the storm this past weekend which left us with a similar amount.

WEATHER PREDICTION: Based on the latest trend data, it looks like the Richmond Metro area will be looking at snowfall anywhere between 4-8" with isolated areas receiving 12"+ towards Short Pump. Regions to the north will see significantly more and regions to the south significantly less.

COUNTY PREDICTION: School attendance tomorrow is questionable at best. Snowfall is supposed to start as early as 6 AM. Keeping this in mind and knowing that the road conditions will only get worse, there is a possibility that local counties (i.e. Henrico, Chesterfield, Richmond City) could close as a preemptive safety measure. There is also a possibility that they may release students early, but this is unlikely- the chances that the county will open schools knowing of the worsening road conditions is unlikely. Generally, early dismissals are carried out when the county is unaware of the weather's impact (rain vs. wintry mix vs. snow). Considering that the county is aware that there will be significant snowfall (assuming Sean's predictions are correct, which we always do), the likelihood of students being sent to school when chances are they will quickly be sent back home is unlikely. Most likely, school will be cancelled entirely, or we will go the full day.

FINAL PREDICTIONS: With a possibility of the Metro area getting over a foot of snow, the chances of being at school are about 50/50. It all depends on WHEN the snow comes. If it is accumulating early, then most likely school will be cancelled. If it is not sticking or there is little accumulation before the school day begins, then there is a possibility for an early dismissal. If snowfall totals through the weekend reach 14", then school will most likely be closed on Monday, possibly Tuesday. Check back for updates throughout the weekend.

REMINDER: Weather predictions are a crapshoot. Nothing is set in stone by any means because of changes that can occur very quickly. Any alteration in the weather means a direct alteration in how the county will respond. Do you homework and be prepared for school, just in case.

Check back for updates throughout the weekend.
